Decluttering Your Closet: NYC Edition

Living in New York City comes with many perks but let’s be honest: closet space is not one of them.

Whether you're in a cozy studio or a one-bedroom walk-up, every inch counts. That’s why decluttering your closet isn't just a luxury—it’s a necessity. As a professional organizer based in NYC, I’ve seen firsthand how a well-edited closet can completely change the way a small space functions.

Why Decluttering Matters

In a city where closets double as storage units and wardrobes live under beds, a cluttered closet can quickly take over your home—and your peace of mind. Here’s why decluttering makes all the difference:

  • Maximize Your Space: It’s possible you don’t have a lot of it, so make every inch count.

  • Make Mornings Easier: No more digging for that one sweater at 7 AM when you’re running late.

  • Create Visual Calm: Small spaces feel bigger when there’s less visual clutter.

  • Live with Intention: Keep what fits your life today, not your fantasy life or “maybe someday” size.

How to Declutter Your Closet

1. Start with a Clear Vision

What do you want your closet to feel like? Airy? Streamlined? Functional? Luxury? Keep that vision in mind as you go.

2. Empty It All Out

Yes, even that bag tucked way in the back. Lay everything out on your bed so you can assess your inventory.

3. Sort by Category

Group your clothes by type—jeans, blazers, sneakers, etc. Seeing everything together helps you realize what you wear most (and what you don’t).

4. Edit

Space is premium real estate—only items that serve you deserve to stay. Ask:

  • Have I worn this in the past year?

  • Do I feel confident in it?

  • Would I buy it again if I saw it in a store today?

If not, it’s time to let it go.

5. Donate, Sell, or Recycle

Make sure to donate, sell, or recycle those items within the next few days to decrease clutter in the new space and leave you with the peace of mind that comes with a freshly edited closet!

6. Organize for Function

Use vertical space—over-the-door organizers, under-bed bins, and slim hangers make a big difference. Label bins. Store off-season items elsewhere— high shelves, storage unit, or under the bed.

7. Maintain It

Maximize drawer space with file folding, an extra step on laundry day will make a world of difference! Shop mindfully try the "one-in, one-out" rule: when you buy something new, donate or sell something old.
